![]() ![]() ![]() Women of African descent have contributed to America’s food culture for centuries, but their rich and varied involvement is still overshadowed by the demeaning stereotype of an illiterate “Aunt Jemima” who cooked mostly by natural instinct. I think a great place to start would be with Toni Tipton Martin’s The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks. Even if you cannot make the dinners, join the club and be a part of the discussion. Henry Rollins was born Henry Garfield in Washington, D.C., on February 13, 1961. All the while, he has kept his artistic integrity, becoming a kind of father figure for many alternative bands of the '90s. ![]() On his spoken-word albums, he is remarkably more relaxed, showcasing a hilariously self-deprecating sense of humor that is often absent in his music. The Rollins Band's records are uncompromising, intense, cathartic fusions of hard rock, funk, post-punk noise, and jazz experimentalism, with Rollins shouting angry, biting self-examinations and accusations over the grind. Since Black Flag's breakup in 1986, Rollins has been relentlessly busy, recording albums with the Rollins Band, writing books and poetry, performing spoken-word tours, writing a magazine column in Details, acting in several movies, and appearing on radio programs and, less frequently, as an MTV VJ. ![]() In the '90s, Henry Rollins emerged as a post-punk renaissance man, without the self-conscious trappings that plagued such '80s artists as David Byrne. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m extremely embarrassed to admit that I had to search all the way back to 2013 when I read her Driven series (which I loved BTW). Full Dark, No Stars is definitely a psychological thriller with dark themes and even darker endings that is absolutely worth picking up and reading. "A Good Marriage" explores the aftermath of a wife's discovery of her milquetoast husband's sinister secret life, while "Fair Extension," the book's most disturbing story, follows the relationship between a man and the best friend on whom he preternaturally shifts all his bad luck and misfortune. Stephen King based this story on the true account of the BTK Killer of Wichita, Kansas, Dennis Rader, whose wife also says she had no idea of her husband’s true identity. "Big Driver" tells of an otherwise ordinary woman who discovers her extraordinary capacity for retribution after she is raped and left for dead. In "1922," a farmer murders his wife to retain the family land she hopes to sell, then watches his life unravel hideously as the consequences of the killing suggest a near-supernatural revenge. ![]() Eerie twists of fate drive the four longish stories in King's first collection since Just After Sunset (2008).
